How To Treat Replace Toner, Low Toner, Toner Ended Print Errors With Brother Printers

To +Michael Zorko who posted a reader comment to one of my previous post regarding his problem with his Brother printer. Here's a short list of proven solutions I found that relates to your concern, and might also help other users with similar problem although having a different Brother printer model.

Brother Printer Replace Toner Error

Toner Low, Replace Toner, Toner Ended -- these are the common error messages displayed on a printer's screen when experiencing cartridge/drum error. Installing a new Brother laser toner cartridge can sometimes solve the problem, but it's not the only solution I found. Read more and you'll learn a few tips and troubleshooting guidelines on how to properly handle such printer problems. If you have a different concern, aside from Replace Toner error, see this link http://goo.gl/wx3zgk. It will take you to Brother's FAQs & Troubleshooting page where you will probably find what you're looking for.

Fix That Print Error Message

The error message would prompt the user repeatedly if the toner cartridges were replaced, yet the drum counter was not reset. Re-installing new cartridges requires you to replace the drum as well. Once the printer recognize the replacement toners, the toner counter will be reset. However, if the drum counter needs manual resetting, you may follow these easy steps:
  • Open the printer's front cover
  • Press Clear or Back button
  • Then depending on your printer model, either press *001 or 1 (from the numpad) to reset.
  • Now close the front cover and let the machine initialize.
**Other Brother printer models would require the user to press certain buttons to continue the process before closing the cover.
Half-Teeth Gear

This solution needs more than just pressing a series of buttons. Locate a specific component which they called "gear" inside the printer, it's typically installed on the left side of the machine. You'll find it shaped as a half-teeth gear, that once you install a cartridge it rotates the gear once. What you need to do are the following:
  • Try to remove the toner cover on the left side.
  • Reposition the half-teeth gear back to its initial state by rotating it.
  • Place the toner cover back and close the printer.
**For newer printer models, the gear can either be found from the machine itself or the toner cartridge.

Another tip more likely similar to the latter, although the terms used are different.
  • Reset the small flag (gear) on the left side of the cartridge by rotating the lever that detects new cartridges.

Precaution

Always make sure that you check these things:
  • Avoid using incompatible cartridges with your printer.
  • Make sure that replacement item is not expired, damaged or faulty before you install it.
  • If buying non-genuine (OEM), verify the retailer/supplier first before you make a purchase.
  • Clean the corona wire of your printer whenever necessary, and follow proper installation.
  • Lastly, and one the most important thing you must know. Update your machine's firmware/driver to its latest.
