It’s not very common to review a
color printer that uses laser technology, cause apparently it’s more typical to
have a color inkjet instead. Wrapped in an off-white and gray combination,
actually the dark shade defines the machine’s output bin, control panel and
front cover. The Brother HL-3140CW offers sterling features such as color
laser printing and wireless connectivity. The CW next to its model indicates
color and wireless functionality. Nevertheless, we can also use C as compact
for this review, since this unit is surprisingly small but still managed to jam
a nice set of features.
Primarily designed to offer print
solution that covers small office printing needs and you can also find a good
fitting for a personal home printer. Acquired the box-shaped style of its
predecessors, this unit weighs around 17kg (kilogram) with the trays and consumables
installed in place. By the way, as a color printer it essentially requires four
toner tanks (Brother TN225 toner cartridges) mainly one each of cyan, magenta, yellow and black. Initially
it comes with a starter set of drum unit and toners. However you have to open
the machine’s front cover, remove the cartridges from their slots, and peel off
the protective seal. Once done, re-install them back and now your printer is
almost ready to print.
When it comes to media handling,
the HL-3140CW’s main input tray can only hold a maximum of 250 sheets of
standard paper. Additionally, a multipurpose tray supplements the main tray,
and supports varying media sizes and types. All printed pages will come out at
the top of the machine where the output bin is placed. So basically, you get
two input trays and an output bin with low capacity.
At the top of the printer, aside
from the output area, there you’ll also find the control panel featuring a mono
LCD. The machine’s model is printed on top of the display, while there’s a
four-way navigation key that covers Back, OK, Secure, Increase/Decrease
options. The Secure button will allow users to print a password protected file
which is stored in memory. Cancel and Go buttons are clearly labeled in red and
green marks. While two LEDs labeled with Data and Error, right below the
control panel are assigned to indicate activity or process.
Users are given two options to
set the machine’s print quality. First option is the Standard which offers a
print resolution of 600x600 dpi (dots per inch), and the second is called Fine
print quality which can produced 1200x2400 dpi results. The printer’s rated
speed reaches up to 19 pages per minute for mono and the same 19 ppm rating for
color. You may expect the machine to print a little slower when printing
colored documents, perhaps it’s a typical issue when it comes to color
printing.
Furthermore, there are several
options that you can play with this printer. Users can set it to print in draft
mode allowing the unit to print only in monochrome setting, or set colored
printing as default. Duplexing or double-sided printing can also be done,
however this functionality requires manual intervention as it doesn’t have an
automatic duplexer.
