Here's the look-alike model of Epson Expression Premium XP-800, the sophisticated Epson Expression Photo XP-850 Small-in-One printer. They are nearly identical if you'll try to compare them side by side. One distinct difference between these two models is the ink system they use. The XP-800 can be considered as the low-end version having 5-ink cartridges consisted of cyan, magenta, yellow, matte black and photo black ink. While the XP-850 uses 6-ink tanks which include the standard CYMK colors, plus a light cyan and light magenta inks. Check out my previous post about Epson Expression Premium XP-80 if you want to learn more about it.
Basically the XP-850 features a 3.5 inch touchscreen LCD display with gesture navigation and clearly labeled buttons on both sides. The front panel interface flips out when accessing the disc tray which allows printing on optical CD/DVDs. Both features are also found in the XP-800 including the connectivity options such as Ethernet and WiFi network support, so users can choose whether to setup the printer on either wired or wireless connection.
It can work as a standalone copier and as a fax machine as well. With the XP-850's ability to read memory card or USB storage device, complemented with the support for PictBridge, user can enjoy printing from and scanning to such devices. If the machine has no possible access to any PC, yet you need to print an image onto an optical disc, just scan the cover image through Copy command, then you may now print it on a disc.
Paper handling capacity for some reason is still limited to a 100-sheet input tray, plus a 20-sheet photo paper tray fro glossy media. The XP-850 features an automatic duplexer for double-sided printing and copying. Since the scanner is fairly limited to letter-size documents, you can use the 30-page ADF (automatic document feeder) instead to scan and fax legal-sized files and pages.
With the ISO standard, Epson rated the printer at 9.5 ppm (pages per minute) print speed for mono, and 9.0 ppm for colour printing. Note that when the XP-850 is set to Best Photo mode, you might notice a decrease in speed.
As for the printer's consumables, luckily I saw a review that stated some nice figures regarding the cost of each cartridges required for XP-850. Both standard and high-capacity ink tanks are available with a slight difference in cost. A single standard-capacity black ink would roughly cost $10.99 yielding 240 pages, while its high-capacity counterpart cost $19.99 and yields 500 pages. That's notably cheaper compared to the HP Deskjet 2510 inks, as black hp inkjet cartridges replacement will cost you $22 for each HP61 standard yield ink.
If you prefer the same features but looking for a considerably less expensive model, I would recommend the XP-800. However, the XP-850 offers a well-packed set of features that are worthy enough for a slight increased in price. Overall the Epson Expression Photo XP-850 Small-in-One printer is a great value color photo printer.
