Which Should You Prefer: Color LaserJet or Inkjet Printers?

Which Should You Prefer: Color LaserJet or Inkjet Printers?
Color laser printers aren't too common to use mainly for colored printing, normally we prefer inkjets as they’re probably more suitable for such purpose. However, if there’s an occasional need to print graphic or image on top of regular monochrome printing, that’s the point where we can consider having the rival of inkjet instead.

Inkjets Over LaserJets

There are downsides whichever you may choose, like for example ink types are typically slower compared to lasers. But you shouldn't look at it as either one is more advantageous than the other. Take note that both of these machines are intended for certain uses that only one of them can perform effectively. These dilemmas are just part of the few reasons why making a decision on which type of printer to choose has been a bit troublesome for others. Those who are not aware, or probably care less about such information are either a personal home user, or just in need of an urgent printer.

Indeed, printing documents with images or graphics is considerably not a forte of laser printers. That is something that inkjets are more than capable of providing the best results. But to make it fair, developers might have thought of giving the lasers their own expertise. Any office or business environment wouldn't debate on this matter that laser type printers or laserjets in general are faster and more efficient on printing text-only or documents with little to less graphic.

Factors to Consider

Engine speed is also a factor which they rival, although nowadays certain inkjet models are capable of matching their speeds over laserjets. If you know a little history about their evolution, laser types are normally faster thus increasing production and throughput in any office or business where they find their places. An inkjet printer on the other hand, is more suitable for home or personal printing due to slow printing speed and several issues. But gone are those days, since our today’s level of technology particularly in the print industry obliterated all these hindrances. Making it fair for ink and laser type printers to deserve a place on different environments, whether for personal use or not.

Cost-per-page, regardless of which type you use will always be an issue especially to users who are kind of familiar on how printer manufacturers make their businesses grow. To shed some light on the matter, it is not their printers that give them the most of their profits, but rather the supplies they sell. For example a Brother printer that uses color TN315 toner cartridges would cost around $500 more or less. But considering the recurring expense of purchasing four replacements over and over again, it will make more sense why printer nowadays are inexpensive compared before.

Choosing The Right Workgroup Printer For Office Or Business Use

A workgroup printer is a device that is capable of handling high an amount of print loads than a typical personal printer. It is used commonly in a business or large-size office with a demanding setting. Since workgroup printers are intended to use by many, it should support LAN (local area network) connection, from which all users in the same network can send prints to the device. One of the benefits from using a workgroup printer is that these devices notably run faster, due to having larger RAM memory and processors that work far better than conventional personal printers.

When choosing a workgroup printer, there are several factors that a user should consider before deciding the right one to buy for their business or office.

Workgroup printers also have a limitation in terms of paper handling capacity and media support. Determine what files will your print, and how much printing will you do with it. These issues may vary depending on the demand and requirement of a business. It's unlikely ideal to have a color laser workgroup printer if you'll only use it for none-graphical files, thus a monochrome will do. Unless you need to regularly print files with graphics and color, an inkjet type will do the job. Choose a workgroup printer that supports optional paper trays, so in case there's a need to expand its capacity there would be no problem.

Business settings, mostly in the IT industry, they're using various operating system and PC environment. Hence, it is important to consider the compatibility of the workgroup printer you're planning to buy. Most of printer nowadays, regardless of type and brand, are highly compatible for Windows users. Although they also support working in Mac OS, the performance might not be as great as it could be when use in Windows PCs. For PCs running in old OS versions, visit the printer manufacturer's website and browse through their list of provided drivers.

Business establishments often have stand-alone machines, instead of having a multifunction. Also, they prefer laser types most of the time, since this type of printer are more suitable for tough and high-level printing, plus laser toner cartridges are considerably less expensive than inks. Indeed the cost of purchasing multifunctions is more affordable. But generally, there's a drawback, an all-in-one works lighter than a stand-alone. However, a multifunction device only requires a single software, yet still, drivers are separately installed. Another considerable snag of using multifunction printer is that when any of its hardware failed to work, the other functionality such as scanning, copying, or fax may neither work.

Top 7 Printers With The Highest Maintenance Cost

Top 7 Printers With The Highest Maintenance Cost
Printer maintenance cycles usually consume an amount of ink or toner, much more than what you have used for printing files and documents. An example of printer maintenance is the print head cleaning, this literally consumes ink from the cartridges. Unless you're suspecting that the nozzles are not delivering enough ink and you're sure about the dots, faint and white lines are due to a clogged print head, don't waste ink from running a print head cleaning. Also, a user may confirm the problem by running the Nozzle Check Utility software provided with the printer, this will help save inks. Take note that it's not proper to run any of these two utility software particularly the Head Cleaning and Nozzle Check, while a file is being printed, otherwise, all files in queue along with the file in progress can be damaged.

Approximately, about 10-25% of inks from the cartridges are wasted each time you clean the print heads. This happens since the cleaning cycle needs to be repeated depending on the test result. Usually, one or two trials may not work, some users have tried a dozen times but never did resolve it.

While there are instances, but not yet proven, wherein the printer after not being used for like a day, suddenly works perfectly as if nothing happen and the clogged print head problem disappear. This can be explained by the fact that inks commonly get dried, turning the printer ON for a moment, run a print head cleaning once, then turn it OFF, and after several hours the inks soften inside the cartridges. Hence, the next day you check the printer, even you don't run any maintenance cycle, it will work just fine.

Here's a trivia related to this post, HP printers are built with two general inkjet print head designs, these are the Integrated Print Head (IPH) and Individual Ink Cartridges (IIC). Either of these designs, when hp inkjet cartridges replacements are installed in the printer, a start-up routine and calibration process will run which also eat up some inks.

From a test conducted by Consumer Reports, these are the printers with the highest maintenance cost :
  • HP Officejet Pro 8600
  • Lexmark OfficeEdge Pro4000
  • HP Photosmart 7520
  • Epson Expression Photo XP-850
  • Canon Pixma MX922
  • HP Photosmart 6520
  • Canon iP7220, iP7250
If you happened to own any printer from the list above, it's either you switched to a more efficient and budget friendly print device, or you'll keep it and will avoid running maintenance cycle as much as possible.

Laser Printer VS Inkjet Printer : Common Issues

First thing you need to determine is to what purpose you'll be using a printer, unless you want to end up having a machine that can do exactly the opposite of what you expect. Laser printers essentially rule basic printing such as text and plain graphics, and typically feature exceptional print speed. On the other hand, inkjet types are rarely use for text-alone printing, simply because it's way too luxurious over using a laser for this task. Inkjet printers are the superior when it comes to photo and high resolution prints, but with a tad slower printing process. Although both type may offer a color version, still inkjets will prevail in terms of producing quality images and full-color graphics. Laser printers are basically good in black&white or mono prints, hence a monochrome laser can spit out crisp and clear text with every printout in a second.

Multifunction printers are good for office and business printing needs. To print alone may be enough for a home office, but ideally, it's better to have a single equipment capable of printing, scanning, copying and sending fax. Between the two types of print devices, laser printers are often preferred by most business establishments and office environments. Primarily because of the speed, cause they need higher productivity in less time. While there are inkjets that can matched up with the speed of lasers, the catch is that the quality is somehow sacrifice. For a personal home printer, an inkjet works best especially if you still have kids that require printing school projects and research.

Printers with supplementary interfaces aside from a USB conneciton is kind of ideal. If it's for personal use, a USB host will do, except for those who intend to purchase one that supports both wired and wireless connection. Professional individuals or home office workers are suited for printers that allow cloud or mobile printing -- print from virtually anywhere. However, workgroups and large working environments will require WiFi connection to support a huge number of users. Additional interfaces like PictBride and memory card slots are optional, depending on your preferences.

Paper capacity is a factor that shouldn't be neglected. Inkjet printers before were limited in capacity, thus they became more suitable for home printing, then eventually they improved by offering larger paper trays and cassettes to fit for heavy-duty printing. A monthly duty-cycle of 8000 pages below will be sufficient enough for home printing, whereas a large office will probably need more than 200,000 pages a month. An automatic-document-feeder that works both in printing and copying makes a plus.

Printer supplies are merely expensive especially ink cartridges, they're comparably high-price than laser toner cartridges. Well you may consider inquiring a printer that supports Econo-mode or Draft-mode printing, that reduces the amount of ink/toner consumption when printing. Purchasing replacements is a recurring expense, so better be ready once you've decided the right model for your needs.

What To Learn About LED Printers?

LED printers have been around since the year of 1983, well unlike LED television nowadays that became really popular, people know limited information about these printers that use LED technology. Basically it's more of like a laser printer, but instead of lasers, LED arrays are being used by LED printers to create prints.

The only similarity between these two types is the fact that they're both using toner cartridges. The process of printing that undergoes in an LED printer is somehow similar to a typical laser printer. Toner particles are applied via the rotating drum unit, however the method of creating a charged area into the drum differs between an LED and a laser printer. In a laser printer, it involves laser lights, rotating mirrors and lenses, while on the other hand, LEDs or light emitting diodes serve as the light source which set the image into the drum.

Resolution-wise, a typical laser printer can produce much crisp output compared to the other one. However this setback is reasonable, in order for an LED printer to achieve 600dpi (dots-per-inch) resolution, there should be 600 pieces of LEDs jammed in an inch.

Okidata was the first manufacturing company that ever produced the very first LED printer model. In the year 1981, the company unveiled the OPP6100 a printing machine that uses LED-array as its source of light. After the success of Oki's proof-of-concept which was the OPP6100, around 1983 Okidata released its successor as the first desktop LED printer, the OPP6220 model.

In our today's world, color LED printers are now available but not too popular on part of the customers since they still prefer using the typical laser printers and inkjet printers. Aside from Okidata LED printers, other major manufacturers in the print industry also developed their own versions. One of which is the Brother HL-3170CDW which actually uses Color LED printing technology and the usual brother toner cartridges. Another model from a different brand is the Dell 1250c Color LED printer, well it seems that Dell has a lot of LED printers to offer.

If you want to see more of these LED printers, you can check out CNET's list of LED printers from different brands. You can also see this brief review about Brother HL-3170CDW Digital Color LED Printer.

A Short List Of Some Notable Color LED Printers From Dell And Brother

Laser printers are getting more and more affordable, the cost of ownership rather falls into the same bracket as of inkjet printers. Hence, when LED printers came into view, they give it a nice deal to offer consumers a new style of printing. Whilst these LED printers are basically laser printers as well, they used LED lights which replaced laser lights from conventional laser printers. The rest of its mechanism are quite the same or rather still complex as with laser printer, not so much of difference. Here's a short list of some of the notable LED printers in the market that might suit your interest.

Brother HL-3170CDW Color LED Printer
Brother HL-3170CDW Color LED Printer
A typically compact color LED printer that provides office-oriented features for small workgroups, with a price range of $199.99 - $290. It supports duplex (double sided) printing, plus wired and wireless interfaces for better connectivity. The printer's main tray capacity which can hold 250 sheets, complements its monthly duty cycle at up to 30,000 pages. The HL-3170CDW's front panel has a fixed mounted display with minimal operational buttons, also the screen is just a mono LCD.

Dell MFP 1355CNW Color LED Printer

Dell MFP 1355CNW Color LED Printer
This one doesn't offer much features compared to the first one, however its economical LED engine compensates it all. It doesn't offer an autoduplexer, but there's an ample of options for connectivity which include a high-speed USB 2.0, LAN and WiFi for wireless networking. Monthly print capacity is the same with HL-3170CDW, but they differ in main tray support since the 1355CNW's bin can only hold 150 sheets. Its LCD is a bit larger, a four-line mono screen with numerous buttons including the directional keys. Since the screen has a bigger space to display more characters, users can control paper size and type, or browse through the printers features and settings.

Dell 1250c Single-Function Color LED Printer
Dell 1250c Single-Function Color LED Printer
Another Dell product, however it's just a single-function machine for users who don't need the fax, copy or scan features. Seemingly, aside from less functionality this printer also lacks Ethernet and WiFi support, and a USB host is the only option to use. Less features means less complex, take note that this printer is dedicated for light-duty printing, hence its input tray only holds 150 sheets. Another remark is that Dell 1250c's option to access the laser toner cartridges is partly different. Instead of popping up the front panel, the access door is located at the right side of the machine to reveal the toner tray.

These are just some of the note worthy and latest printer models that use LED printing technology. While there are more them to consider, some are just late models that at this time there might be an upgraded version of them to feature instead. For a full list of LED printers, visit CNET's printer review page about LED printers.

Your Easy Guide For Buying A New Printer

Buying a printer isn't just like going to a grocery store then pick up everything from your item list. There are several questions and factors which should be considered especially for someone who haven't bought a printer before. Figure out every single detail and determine your needs, start by asking yourself with the question "How?". You are supposed to use it for a certain purpose, but how are you planning to do so. Do you intend to make use of it for business or just a personal printer? It's overwhelming and the best way to make it easy is by pointing out your primary purpose of buying a printer.

Office, Home or Business?
A personal printer or home printer somehow serve partly limited features. All-in-one or multifunction printers can either be use for home, office or business printing, it's the machine's additional features that determine its suitable environment. Photo printers usually offer CD/DVD printing functionality, however not all models or brands supports this feature. If the printer is mainly for business, look for high-capacity printers with quoted duty cycle of not below 100,000 pages.

Wired or Wireless?
Wireless networks are available almost everywhere, even mobile devices that supports wireless connection are very common. If your home, office, or business has wireless networking, get a WiFi enabled printer so you set it up over a network where everyone can connect to it and send their prints. Shared printers or workgroup printers offer wider range of printing possibilities. In addition, mobile printing is now widely by most users, hence a printer which supports printing form virtually anywhere bears a lot of importance.

Standard-capacity or High-capacity?
This question can be answered briefly by simply determining the environment from where you plan to use the machine. The level or volume of printing at home is different from the demand in any office or business environment. For home, an input tray with 100-sheet capacity is sufficiently enough, while for larger businesses a 580-sheet tray is more than sufficient.

Supplies and Consumables
Print quality is dependent to the consumables you will be using with your printer, these can either be a laser toner cartridge or an inkjet cartridge, depending on the type of machine you bought. While toners doesn't have much differences, inks have two types such as dye-based and pigment-based. Among these two ink types the first one produces more vivid and high-definition output.

Xerox Making A Transition By Offering Technology Services

Xerox Making A Transition By Offering Technology Services
With the slow-moving growth of Xerox businesses particularly in the print industry, the company is kind of shifting to provide better technology services as a workaround regarding the decline in their printer business revenue. Services to be offered include bill processing, managing toll systems, document management, IT outsourcing and health care programs, which is now covering a larger fraction of the company's business.

From a recent release, Xerox's business revenue somewhat fell by 9% in its first quarter. However, the company is said to expect a staggering revenue from its document technology business in its second quarter. Xerox Corporation fondly expects by the year 2017, to generate about 2/3 of its revenues from the company's services division.

If the demand for business printers and copiers continues to decline, it will greatly affect Xerox's revenues. For a fact, the company's printing business generated a revenue that is 8.7% less compared to its previous score. Behind all this circumstances, Xerox Corporation still has a good grip that the company will meet its full-year earnings. Xerox is renovating itself by partly keeping its printing business in the bench, and making a transition to switch its focus to wider services.

It can't be helped, Xerox is not the only printer manufacturer that has been affected by the market transition. Consumers are now accessing their files and documents through several options like cloud storage, even tablets and smartphones play a big role in these changes. That instead of having those files printed, customers are just keeping a soft copy in their tablets so they can view it anytime needed. Hence, the need for a printer equipment decreased in the recent years.

No wonder why some of the big names in the print industry are optimizing their products to better suit the demands of their customers. Epson for example, is switching to refillable ink reservoirs to provide cost-efficient printing solution, while other manufacturers end up selling their printing business. Maybe if these companies just lowered the price of their printer products such as laser toner cartridges, ink cartridges, and other supplies, they could have avoided such downfall.

Mac Print Failures Basic Solutions and Troubleshooting

There are a few common causes why after hitting the Print button with your Mac PC, failures and problems come out instead of the printout. Since there's a quite number of print failure for Mac users, one or two troubleshooting techniques might not be enough. Although sometimes, a user can be too lucky to try a single solution and works wonderfully with the machine. But remember that any particular troubleshooting technique may or can be applied to other printer and PC, such that there is no guarantee that it will work the same way.

To help you find the possible right solution to your Mac printing problem, here's a list of easy solutions you can try to fix print failures with your Mac.
  • First typical solution is by pressing Command-P. Once press a dialog box will appear, notice if there's an exclamation mark at the left side of the printer's name. If yes, then that means there's a problem with the printer you have selected. It's either you chose the wrong printer or it was set to the model of the last printer you used. Check the name of the printer that appears on the prompt, and select the right unit.
  • Also, note that a paused printer will halt from processing prints unless you click the Resume button to keep it going. Always check you Print Queue to avoid such problems. To open the Queue window, go to Apple Menu - System Preferences - Print&Scan - Select your printer model, and then hit Open Print Queue
  • If doing those two methods doesn't fix your problem, then from Mac's end proceed on checking the printer itself. There are basic things many users may sometimes forget, hence it result to frustrating print failures. What are these basics? Is the printer actually ON or OFF, it's so ridiculous to find out that you simply haven't turned the printer ON which causes print failure. See if there are enough paper materials from the feeder, also check inside for any paper jams.
  • Another printer end basic troubleshooting, make sure that all the cables and ports you are connected from are all working properly. Reconnecting your printer will sometimes do the trick to fix a print failure. Also, check the consumables inside your printer, are the ink and laser toner cartridges still full enough or are they low on ink/toner. Maybe you just have to replace the cartridges and your printer's good to go again. Although there are certain printer model nowadays that comes with a built-in feature that notifies that user whenever inks and toners are running low so you can have much time to buy a replacement.
  • Software updates are really important, it is a best practice to always update your printer's driver and software. There are instances from which a user uninstall and re-install a printer with an updated software and driver, then suddenly it works properly.

Andy MulDowney's mPrinter : Portable Printer

Andy MulDowney's mPrinter
Before, when mobile devices were introduce to the market, they are typically big in sizes and designs, but as time progresses these mobile devices started to shrink and became a small as palm-size tools. Portability is always an issue when it comes to technological devices, but for some manufactures it's typical to introduce a product from a bigger size then shrink it later for its upgraded version. You might as well notice it, enhanced products like for example a mobile phone or a printer comes in small sizes once the first introduced product clicks the market. One good example would be the Samsung SIII, which most of us for sure are aware that it really hits the masses, turning the iPhone sales down since it was launched. After the successful released of SIII, they consecutively followed it by launching the Samsung SIII mini, which is indeed more compact and portable.

On the printing market industry, offices and businesses requires high-capacity printing, thus they need larger printer equipments to suffice their printing needs. Still, there are compact laser and inkjet printers that are available in the market that feature the same functions but has lesser capacity. Portable and compact printers are mostly preferred for home and personal printing use. There are also these small single function printers that work specifically just for a particular task. An example would be, Andy MulDowney's mPrinter, it was built mainly for printing dynamic snippets of information as well as capable of printing news, weather, tweets and small information.

Andy MulDowney's mPrinter can be connected to any Wi-Fi capable device including mobile phones, tablets, iPads or iPhones, and any other device that supports Wi-Fi connectivity. Its concept of printing is quite similar to those used in check outs which is a thermal printer, unlike a typical laser printer that uses lasers and laser toner cartridges to create printouts. The mPrinter is a very low cost device that can be used to print snippets and some sort of small information.

Would you even believe that this small printer is actually made from a 3D printer? The mPrinter is aesthetically built with the use of 3D printing technology. A small and very portable printer that you can carry around to create printouts easily. Though it needs a few more final touches before it can be introduce to the market, and is said to be released around the month of February next year. While the man behind this device, Andy MulDowney, hopes for the best that his mPrinter will change people's lives by making it more easier and interesting for them to print using this portable printer.

Noteworthy Printer Specs To Check

Christmas is the season to spend, though not everyone gets to experience splurging to buy goodies, gifts and gadgets for this Christmas, still we should be thankful for what we already have and for those blessings that will come. For those who are planning or would like to have a new printer equipment this month of December, take note of these important printer specifications that you should know before you make that purchase.

It's typical for a consumer to research about a particular product, especially if they really want that item but still hesitating to purchase with all the doubts in their head. So one way to eliminate those doubts is by checking the item beforehand, description, quality, specifications and all, factors that you should learn about that particular product so you won't end up wasting your hard earned money.

For consumers who would like to purchase a new printer, whether to replace your old equipment or you just want a new one, these printer specifications indicated from this post should really be noteworthy.

First would be monthly duty cycle. This one does really matter, though it may be considered as not the most important one. How is this thing spec so important? The monthly duty cycle of a printer indicates the durability and work load capacity of an equipment, a primary metric that a business or a large office could use to determine the appropriate printer for their working environment. However, for users who prefer personal printers, monthly duty cycle may not appear from the printer specs since these type of printers are built for lower printing demands.

Next on our list would be the printer's page yield. A new printer always comes with a set of initial laser toner cartridges or ink cartridges, about half way full of inks or toners, but regardless of the provided initial set, page-yield is a spec that is provided from the printer's overall specifications. Page yield indicates the number of pages that can be printer based from the installed cartridges on the printer. However, it may still vary depending on how much you print and what you often print.

Third would be the printer's resolution. Print resolution and scan resolution are two factors that should be considered. Though printer manufacturers have manipulated this factor: improving image quality without adjusting the dpi into larger size that exceeds the typical dots-per-inch resolution which is 600 x 600. A true 1200 x 1200 dpi print resolution can produce exceptional printouts. When talking about scan resolution, 300 dpi would be just enough, to effectively measure the printer's scan resolution check the specs and look for "Optical Resolution", but take note that higher scan resolution may lead to slow scan time.

Cost Effective Printer Cartridges
What are these toner particles, and toner cartridges for? They play a very important role in the printing process of your printers. If you want nothing but the best that you can expect from your printer, then you also need to pay attention to those printer supplies that you purchase.

Genuine printer cartridges especially the toner cartridges can undoubtedly deliver the highest reliability, consistency and performance, as well as of course quality. However you also spend much from regularly purchasing original brand cartridges, though if you've been used to using OEM printer cartridges then you don't have to think about the expense. But do you also know that you can make great savings from purchasing alternative printer supplies and cartridges, without compromising the quality?

The first and most important thing you should do, is find the perfect, trust worthy manufacturer, the one that you're sure to provide quality products, with good customer service and has a warranty or return service. You'll surely find one that's near your area, since the competition in the production of re-manufactured printer cartridges has greatly increased. Third party manufacturers has improved their products to compete with the other manufacturing companies, thus the growing number of re-manufacturers will surely suffice your demand for laser toner cartridges or ink cartridges.

Make a list of all the stores that you find reliable, and trust worthy enough. Don't Get Lured By The Figures When Buying Printers

Printer equipment nowadays are too eye catching and enticing in terms of their market price. Most buyers would be glad to have a great savings and so they get easily lured by the figures. They end up purchasing a new printer equipment without having any concern of what will happen after the purchased. It may be less expensive, but it's just the beginning of all the expense that comes when owning a printer.

Before you do that purchase, think of all the factors that shouldn't be taken for granted when buying a new printer equipment. One good thing to be concern of first, is the printer's consumables. Let's say you only purchased your printer for about a hundred dollars, but once you started to buy replacement cartridges the expense piles up so quickly, exceeding the amount you have spent from purchasing your printer. You also need to remind yourself of the printers maintenance, cause definitely that is also part of your printers expense.

Still there's this undying questions from so many consumers asking about which type of printer is the most cost-effective. Based from the response of other users, Inkjet type of printer is least expensive compared to the other type. There are inkjet type of printers that can be availed for less than a hundred dollars, though I may not be sure to say that there are also laser type printer that can be purchased for the same value.

The catch of buying less expensive inkjet type printer goes like this, you pay for a small price to get the printer, then it'll leach your money from purchasing replacement ink cartridges and special papers that can only be used for inkjet type of printers and for special purposes. Ink cartridges usual cost starts from $10 above up to more than $30. However printers with high capacity ink cartridges are more expensive and has a higher page-yield. As a way to save, some users tend to purchase alternative printer cartridges like remanufactured toner cartridges and ink cartridges for their printer which are cheaper to buy.

On the other hand, the laser type of printer cost a little bit higher compared to inkjet printer. Prices varies, as well as the page-yield and capabilities of the printer, it applies to both type of printers. Laser toner cartridges costs seem higher as compared to the other type, however it can produce higher page-yield than the other type. This type of cartridge can typically produce about 3,000 to 10,000 standard pages of print, which means the cost-per-page is much cheaper. Also, laser printer comes with a separate laser toner cartridges dedicated for each color, unlike with ink cartridges that uses a single cartridge for the color ink. So you don't have to replace all the cartridges whenever a single color only runs out of toner, that saves you a lot.
